Interresting!
Zebra, trewavasae, estherae are the same at Chiofu and Masinje, do you know if all the mbunas are the same at both localities?
Border is another name for Chiofu or fishes were caught at wrong place?

Usually fish need some km streach of sand barrier before male color changes
Look at a map on eastcoast from Chiofu and up, not a lot of sand accept few beaches.
Depending on how you measure distance from Chiofu to border you have 1½ to 2½km in straight line
https://goo.gl/maps/MC99h
If you ask divers they say all eastcoast is Masinje meaning from border and Down arround to where it turns in towards Eccles and West Reef.
And Places/cities are like Chiofu, Gome, Ntekete, Niatumbu and Malope
So a translation of their Word would be a county or by Google translate to French comté

Ok, If I understand what you say, there are no variety between Chiofu, Gome, Ntekete, Niatumbu, Malope, Masinje cause there are no sand barrier?
(sorry google translate is not famous in this case
)
So what do you think of chryspmallos Chiofu and Masinje , they looks like different

Of cause this doesn't fit all cichlids, but most of them.
Also chrysomallos soem species in Mocambique look a lot like it in head shape but not male colors
http://www.malawicarsten.dk/test/default.asp?iID=GGGDDD
But you have good amount of Beach at Meponda, just North of border

Can you confirm that the chrysomallos from Masinje is different than the chrysomallos from Chiofu? We had an import from Masinje a few years ago and they were yellow breasted... I wonder if they actually came from Masinje...

Hi
I have video of chrysomallos at Gome here:
http://www.malawicarsten.dk/test/default.asp?iID=GGEEEG
And Pictures from Ntekete, South of Gome:
http://www.malawicarsten.dk/test/default.asp?iID=GGEFFH
Ntekete is no 3 spot down from the top that is Gome:
https://goo.gl/maps/s31EA
Problem is that most locals call eastcoast Masinje...
For the "fun" of it, at Gome you have a river called Msinje and South og Chiofu you have Nsinje...
Try saying these 3 Words out loud: Masinje , Msinje , Nsinje
Easy to mix if you don't hear it right first time...
Anyone else having feeling of a mix-up coming here ???

Please notice that I believe the chrysomallos Masinje to be collected in the lake on the Eastern shore!
My best guess is that it's done further South than Chiofu because you see lot of underwater Pictures with the yellow head there.
Like Larry Johnson's from Malopa/Malope
http://www.malawicichlidimports.ca/larr ... %20pg5.htm
One note from original description of the chrysomallos in the :
A revision of the blue-black Pseudotropheus zebra (Teleostei: Cichlidae) complex from LakeM alaw'iA, frica, with a description of a new genus and ten new species
Stauffer write that chrysomallos is endemic to Mumbo Island (page labeled 199)
AND after looking into this matter - just discovered I actually have video of the Ntekete as well taken in the lake..
So have to add that to my website as well!

So chrysomallos at Masinje must be all blue, right? It's further south that they begin to be yellow breasted?
It would mean that there is no sand barrier between Chiofu and Masinje and all mbunas are the same between the two localities...

Problem is that Masinje (by locals) is all eastcoast including Gome, Chiofu, Ntekete,Malope and much more
So a Masinje chrysomallos can in therory be blue or the blue with yellow
BUT this depends on how you think of Masinje - as some White people (us) use Masinje for area from border and bit South of Chiofu..
If the local divers collect it at Southern part of the eastcoast - it's still Masinje by their Words!
You see problem?
I think that the yellow chrysomallos is collected at the southern part of eastcoast.
Then you have the Nsinje River as a barrier to stop the fishes mixing.
Look at map here:

Yes but when I look at the map on CRC ( http://www.cichlidae.com/locality.php?id=234&lang=fr ), Masinje and Chiofu are both above Nsinje river... So the chrysomallos are, may be, blue and yellow under Nsinje river. It's difficult to know exactly if all mbunas are the same between both localities especially if the local divers catch the fishes on all east coast...malawicarsten a écrit :Then you have the Nsinje River as a barrier to stop the fishes mixing.
Thank you for all your explanations!

Carsten, (what's your first name?), have you seen some differences between blue and blue/yellow
When i look photos, the blue yellow seems to have a upper body,no?

Hi
Yes names and understanding of how the local people use it is allways a problem...
What I can see when googling chrysomallos is that above Nsinje they lack yellow and below they have it.
Problem is WHO is right Google or the local people
Maybe all these post on locality should be moved from this Labeotropheus trewavasaew border???
Blue with yellow are lot similar to Maylandia aurora but no yellow dorsal - if this makes sense...
Lionel my first name is Carsten
